A Volatile Conversation: Race in America
July 3, 2008
Note for the readers: This is a two part series on race in America. Part I deals with a lot of the misconceptions about racial conflict, and Part II deals with the new racism that we are experiencing as a country. These parts will be posted 3 days apart.
Title of Part I: “Part I: The Misconceptions”
As a member of the upper middle class from an overwhelmingly white suburb of Chicago, I really can’t say that my ethnic and racial background is much of a story by itself. However, because of the way I’ve grown up, and because of some of the people and experiences that I’ve had in my life, I feel like it is proper, and timely during this election campaign, to talk about an issue out of my normal ‘realm’; that being race in America.

IUplanet had a chance to talk today with new Hoosier Adam Replogle’s high school coach, Coach Ron Ullery of Centerville High School (OH). Replogle decided to commit to Indiana yesterday, continuing IU’s recent recruiting run. He will join his brother, sophomore linebacker and former Centerville standout Tyler Replogle on the Indiana squad in 2009.
Here’s what Coach Ullery had to say about Replogle’s decision to come to IU, playmaking ability, and potential as a Hoosier:
On Replogle’s performance and role in high school:

IU recently announced that it would be giving up another two scholarships for the 2008-2009 season thanks to an expected poor performance in the Academic Progress Rate. The Hoosiers are set to receive a pretty dismal rating thanks to to the number of players that have exited the program in one way or another this past year. This leaves IU with only one remaining scholarship for this season, and a total of three lost scholarships total.
While this may sound like a devastating turn of events, it’s really not as bad as it sounds, and is actually a great move for IU. Because… [Read More]
This is a tad off-topic, but it’s a very interesting development for former Hoosier standout and new Los Angeles Clipper Eric Gordon, who was drafted seventh overall just last week.
After opting out of his contract with the Golden State Warriors, point guard Baron Davis recently agreed to sign a 5-year, $65 million contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. He averaged 21.8 points, 7.6 assists, and 4.7 rebounds last season.
This means that the Clippers now have a definitive answer at point guard and can play Gordon at his natural position as shooting guard. Gordon’s floor leadership and overall point guard skills were very questionable, but everybody knows he can score.
Now with Davis running the offense, he gets the chance to do just that while learning the NBA ropes alongside an established veteran. Depending on how quickly Gordon develops, the pair could develop into one of the most dynamic backcourts in the league. If the Clippers can resign… [Read More]
Last week the first Big Ten Picture featured the Northwestern Wildcats. This week we take a look at the Iowa Hawkeyes, with an in-depth preview and outlook courtesy of Storminspank from the dedicated Hawkeye site Blackheartgoldpants.com, followed by some of our own analysis on how IU will match up.
After a disappointing 6-12 Big Ten record and 8th place finish in Todd Lickliter’s first season as Iowa’s head… [Read More]
Even for those supporters in staunch denial or disbelief early this year, one thing has become painfully apparent over the past couple months: IU messed up. Big time. And the athletic department, basketball program, coaches, faculty, and fans are all going to end up paying a steep price.
While it’s usually not a good thing to just give up a fight, now seems like the right time for us to throw in the towel and try to roll with the NCAA’s punches. In fact, it already appears that the university is moving in that very direction.
From the addition of the “Failure to monitor” allegation and … [Read More]
When athletics director Rick Greenspan announced that he would be stepping down from his position at the end of this year, many IU fans exulted. Others, however, just wondered. Was Greenspan really the guy responsible for IU’s current situation, or was his vilification the result of popular belief and the actions of someone higher up? This heated debate is sure to continue for quite some time.
On September 2, 2004, Former IU President Adam Herbert appointed Greenspan as director of athletics. Before coming to IU, Greenspan amassed 25 years of experience and served as athletics director at Illinois State and Army. He was nothing less than an outstanding candidate, rising to the top of a pool of around 100 potential choices.
Besides the Kelvin Sampson… [Read More]
Playing at Centennial High School in Roswell Georgia, defensive end Euclid (pronounced you-klid) Cummings didn’t expect to get recruited by the Indiana Hoosiers, but he got a nice surprise when IU gave him his first scholarship offer after Coach Bobby Johnson came to one of his practices in the spring. Now the rising senior is hoping to take an official visit to Bloomington before he makes his decision.

The fast-rising prospect has garnered a number of offers after camping with several schools, and is looking for a few more before he makes his decision. IU is high on his list.
