With star quarterback Kellen Lewis still indefinitely suspended, a question mark remains at the position for the Hoosiers. Luckily, Coach Bill Lynch and the IU coaching staff have several viable options that should be set to compete for the starting job in the near future. Freshman-to-be Adam Follett, who committed last August, hopes to be part of that group.

During the recruiting process, he was greatly impressed by the coaching staff, facilities, and potential for the program, and chose Indiana over several in-state options, including Central Michigan and Michigan State.

Follett is rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals.com, but he has the potential to be much more than that. He has close to ideal size for his position at around 6’5”, 200 lbs, and is still very raw.

Much of that rawness can be attributed to an interesting high school career, during which he played three years at Caledonia High School (MI) before transferring to Alma High School for his senior year. Follett transferred to get reps in Alma’s pass-heavy spread offense, which… [Read More]

Even before Tom Crean came to the Hoosiers, Maurice Creek knew that Indiana University had much of what he wanted from a college: great tradition, education, and a basketball mindset.

When the Crean & Crimson era officially started and the perfect coach was added to the equation, the deal was pretty much sealed for the 6’4”, 185 lb guard out of South Kent (CT), who committed earlier this month.

If you’re like most IU students (including myself), the first thing that passed through your mind when you learned of the new “I-Bucks” meal plan (that is, if you’ve even heard about it yet) was probably something along the lines of “I-Bucks? What the hell?”

Students have a new kind of meal point next year: the I-Buck

As a student I was quite concerned with the new idea, the motives behind it, and how it would affect the already shallow pockets of IU students.

Fortunately I was able to talk to the creator of the plan, business consultant and RPS training coordinator Errol A. Huffman, who basically… [Read More]

According to several sources, soon-to-be junior guard Jeremiah Rivers has officially decided to transfer to Indiana from Georgetown and plans to be on the court for Coach Tom Crean and the Hoosiers for the 2009-2010 season. Because of the transfer he is required to sit out for next season before he is eligible for his remaining two years.

Rivers, the son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, is 6’4”, 205 lbs, and he averaged 2.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, and an assist off the bench for the Hoyas last season. He and forward Vernon Macklin both elected to transfer earlier this month, but where Rivers would actually end up was a mystery until very recently.

Although Rivers didn’t put up big numbers offensively, he played the role of defensive stopper for the Hoyas against… [Read More]

When the ball is in his hands, IU commit and freshman-to-be Shane Covington expects to smell the end-zone. The 6’0”, 181 lb running back/wide receiver out of Milwaukee Riverside (WI) committed to Indiana University back in early August of 2007 after forming a relationship with then-running backs coach Gerald Brown. Since then, Brown moved on to the NFL, but Covington is still IU-bound and expects to help the Hoosiers in many ways.

Covington excelled in both football and track in high school

Covington racked up over 600 passing yards and 500 rushing yards as a senior and 478 yards receiving his junior year, in addition to ranking among the nation’s best in track (triple jump and long jump). He… [Read More]

Bill Lynch and the Indiana University football team landed one of the biggest commitments IU has seen in some time when Darius Willis committed to the Hoosiers back in December. Willis, who is 6’0”, 215 lbs, starred at running back for Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis. The ultra-productive Willis was one of the top in-state recruits, amassing 1,728 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns and being named runner-up for the state Mr. Football award.

Willis left many of his opponents in the dust at Franklin Central

IUplanet got a chance to talk to Darius today about his recruitment and coming to play next season.

Official press release:

Indiana Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Crean announced today that freshman Brandon McGee (Chicago/Crane HS) has been dismissed from the program for academic and team guideline negligence.

“Our coaching and support staff tried to make this work out, but we felt that there were some basic standard operating procedures that were not being met,” said Crean. ”I feel badly for his family and Coach (Anthony) Longstreet (Crane Head Coach) who were helping us to try and make this work, but in the end it just was not possible to continue in the current direction.”

He played in just 17 games and averaged 1.5 points and 1.0 rebounds.

Apparently McGee was struggling academically and not living up to his responsibilities as an Indiana basketball player. He saw his playing time during the season rapidly decrease when former Coach Kelvin Sampson didn’t feel like he was playing intense enough in practice. With Crean’s decidedly higher standards on such issues, McGee probably never… [Read More]

With the flurry of recent signings and commitments, many IU fans are probably wondering how many scholarships we have remaining for 2008, and how many we may (or may not) have available for 2009. Here’s a look at our situation for the next couple of years.

When looking at the future years, remember that nothing is definite. Players leaving to transfer to other schools or for other reasons often free up scholarships down the road. Also, some walk-ones may earn scholarships, either full or year-to-year.

Today was a big day for Indiana basketball recruiting, with lots of mixed news and feelings about the results.

First let’s start with the good news. IU athletics made 7’0” 250 lb juco transfer Tijan Jobe’s signing official today in a press release (according to his former coach, he signed the letter of intent yesterday). The full press release can be found below.
